Martin Barre appeared on every Jethro Tull studio LP from 1969’s Stand Up to 2003’s The Jethro Tull Christmas Album, making the iconic guitarist nearly as essential to the group’s legacy as singersongwriter Ian Anderson. That’s why it’s such a treat to see him celebrate their iconic catalogue during tonight’s A Brief History Of Tull show. Bolstered by a top-notch band and a consistently friendly atmosphere, Barre and company give fans nearly two hours of delightful recreations and appealing interactions.
Jethro Tull’s fourth collection, 1971’s Aqualung, remains their most popular, so it’s no surprise that the quintet devote a lot of time to it. They play the majority of the record, with multifaceted rockers Wind-Up, Hymn 43, My God and the title track working wonderfully alongside poignant acoustic ballads Wond’ring Aloud, Slipstream and Cheap Day Return. Cumulatively, they emphasise how stylistically diverse Jethro Tull were on Aqualung and bring nostalgic joy to virtually all attendees.
