Diarmaid MacCulloch
Thomas Cromwell: A life
Thomas Cromwell is one of the most famous—or notorious—figures in English history. Interest has been recently renewed in him by Hilary Mantel’s fictional Wolf Hall trilogy. But who was the real man behind the legend? Cromwell rose from obscurity to become Henry VIII’s chief minister. He helped the king divorce from Rome, dissolve the monasteries and make (and then break) Anne Boleyn. Diarmaid MacCulloch produces the definitive life of a man who has been regarded, over time, as a Protestant martyr, the first bureaucrat and a Stalinist-style enforcer. “This is the biography we have been awaiting for 400 years,” says Mantel.
