Cold comfort
As we reach the depths of winter, it can be tempting to hibernate. But while there are benefits to taking things slower, there’s no need to hide away from the natural world.
A survey by Mind and GO Outdoors found that two-thirds of us feel mentally better after spending time outside – even if 28 per cent of us are put off by the British weather!
Exposure to sunlight will keep your circadian rhythms in check, regulating your mood, sleep and digestion, while cold air flushes bacteria from your airways.
Observing the seasons and wildlife is beneficial for us, too.
Guide your walk outdoors with the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, where you use your senses to take in your surroundings, spotting five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.
Dress to impress
Get your gladrags on for a good cause for Party Dress Day 2023, on Friday 27 January. This fundraiser for The Good Grief Trust was started in lockdown to bring people together in a socially distanced event, and help them remember happier times. Now, it’s an annual event to bring joy to January and to encourage conversations about bereavement. To participate, put on a party outfit for the day, whether you’re walking the dog or going to the office, and donate at justgiving.com/ partydressday. Post a picture on social media with the hashtag #partydressday too.
