CANCER CARE
New research has confirmed that eating less meat significantly decreases our risk of cancer. A study of 40–70 year olds, led by the University of Oxford, found that cancer risk was two percentlower in thosewho atemeat five times or less per week, 10 per cent loweramong thosewho atefishbut not meat, and 14 per centloweramong vegetarians andvegans, compared to those who ate meat morethan five times per week.Whenitcametospecificcancers, the results varied too: those who ate meat five times or less per week had a nine percentlowerriskofcolorectal cancer, comparedto those who ate meat more than five times per week. Postmenopausal vegetarian women had an 18 per cent lower risk of breast cancer than thosewho ate meat morethanfive times perweek, which researchers say may be due to vegetarian women tending to have alower body mass index (BMI) than women who ate meat. If you aren’t vegetarian, cutting downonred meatin favour of whitemeat, or swappingsome meals to fish, could be a great alternative if you are concerned about cancer risk.
