Dance of Ludi Magni (1984) by Gillian Ayres at Marlborough London.
Dynamic and gestural, this vast 5ft 6in x 11ft 3in (1.67 x 3.45m) oil on canvas, above, was painted by Gillian Ayres (1930-2018) during the 1980s.
The decade was a transformative period for the artist. Tired of teaching in art school, she resigned and in 1981 relocated from Barnes in London to the remote Llyn peninsula in north-west Wales where she resolved “to paint like hell”.
