2022 is set to be a huge year for the sport of athletics and the January issue of AW looks ahead to what will be a packed 12 months.

Defending world indoor champion hurdler Andy Pozzi speaks about why this is such a pivotal time for him, while American sprinter Trayvon Bromell – the fastest man in the world in 2021 – is eyeing a World Championships medal in Oregon to earn him the respect he believes is due to him.

England Athletics Team Leader Kelly Sotherton underlines why the Commonwealth Games still has a huge role to play, too, while Olympic champion long jumper Malaika Mihambo can't wait to compete in front of a home crowd again when the European Championships arrives in Munich.

Athlete welfare has regularly been in the news in recent months and, as we are bombarded with "new year, new you" messages which can accentuate anxieties around body image and damage mental health, we hear from a few athletes about some very important issues.

Verity Ockenden writes about why she feels it's best to rebel against resolutions, while Kate Seary and Amber Keegan of campaign group Kyniska Advocacy insist it's time to educate coaches and athletes about why the "athletic aeshtetic" needs to change.

In an extremely powerful and honest interview, marathon runner Hayley Carruthers opens up about the mental health problems and eating disorders she has had to contend with. Having been able to find joy in her sport once again, her story could offer crucial comfort to anyone who might be finding themselves in a downward spiral.

We look back at December's highly successful European Cross Country Championships in Dublin, while there's also a big interview with British distance star and Euro Cross gold medallist Charles Hicks.

Our merit rankings offer some clues as to which athletes to watch out for in 2022, while our performance section features Olympic champion and world record-holder Ryan Crouser taking you inside the shot put.
