McLaren says that the MCL33 is an evolution of the 2017 chassis, and it does look very well detailed in all the critical downforce-producing areas. On many occasions last season, Fernando Alonso stated that the McLaren was the best chassis in the pitlane. Now, he should have the power unit to prove it in the form of the Renault. Even when the overall package wasn’t up to the level of Mercedes, Renault-powered Red Bull has still managed to pull of a few wins in the V6 era. So assuming that the French manufacturer has burned the midnight
oil on power-unit development over the winter, 2018 will offer no hiding place for McLaren.
