Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on 14 October – 3,731 days after it launched. That’s a pretty good innings – just six days shorter than Windows 7 and six longer than Vista (though XP still holds the record at 4,548). And yet no previous operating system’s demise has been so controversial. That’s entirely Microsoft’s fault. It never did enough to dispel the casual pledge made in May 2015 by its ‘developer evangelist’ Jerry Nixon that “Windows 10 is the last version of Windows”.
