Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg, exemplary golden couple in art as in life, are once again set to make a star turn this summer in Italy. On August 26th, in the suggestive setting of the Arena in Verona, they will present Romeo & Juliet, a new version of Prokofiev’s ballet created by Johan Kobborg and produced by Polunin Ink. Alina will take up one of her most comfortable roles as Juliet, alongside the stellar Sergei Polunin as her ill-fated lover Romeo. Polunin has never danced this key role in the repertoire before, and there is great expectation for his performance. We went to meet all three for a chat in London, stealing a little time from their busy schedules.
In this issue also we meet the French choreographer Olivier Dubois, guest at the Bolzano Danza Festival with his new work Tropismes in which he projects Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy onto the club scene, as well as the South Korean Eun-Me Ahn, a surprising artist and shaman who has been invited to the Festival Oriente Occidente for a second year running, this time to present her new show North Korea Dance in which dance signals a thawing between the two Koreas as it goes in search of common roots. We also remember Margot Fonteyn, the great Prima Ballerina, in a long overdue piece that gives an insight into her incredible personality. And finally, we review the biggest Italian and European premieres as well as offering some great sneak previews in this packed new issue.
