If you’ve got a nose for travel, head to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where the tourist office is now promoting ‘olfactory trails’ based on the notion that scent can imprint memories and offer an emotional way to engage with our surroundings (an increasing number of hotels now employ professional perfumiers). This focus on a destination’s olfactory qualities is an innovative approach to travel, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia has a host of ways to experience the region through its scents, from food and wine experiences to gardens, nature walks and olfactory tastings. Among the attractions recommended for a scent of the region are the rose garden in Cordovado, the azalea garden of Gorizia and the sage trail of Karst – but the are plenty more places to sniff out as well.
