The Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Kyle is to close following an independent review into 10 planned closures. Kate Forbes MSP has voiced her disappointment after the Johnston Carmichael review stated use of the Kyle branch was low. The report also A planning application for SIMEC Energy’s Glenshero wind farm near Laggan has been lodged. The 168-megawatt scheme, comprising 39 turbines, eight kilometres north west of Laggan, is intended to provide ‘green power’ for Scottish industry and represents a significant boost to parent company GFG Alliance’s investments in Scotland. If approved, the company says the wind farm would trigger up to £158m of capital investment with approximately £23m being spent in the Highlands’ economy during construction alone. The application follows a year of environmental and technical studies and public consultation. SIMEC Energy, which already operates a hydro power plant linked to the British Liberty Aluminium smelter at Fort William, had mentioned it was not the last bank in the town. The Mallaig branch closed during the summer. Ms Forbes said she would be happy to work with the bank to see improvements in both areas, including the creation of pre-arranged collections for businesses seeking to deposit large amounts of cash. Ms Forbes said: ‘While I recognise branch use has declined, there are still legitimate questions regarding security and disabled access in the alternative banking provision.’
