STAR LETTER
Felixstowe freight
CONGRATULATIONS to John Heaton and GBRf for the Practice & Performance article in the July issue on the freight run from Felixstowe North to Peterborough, showcasing the intricate interactions between infrastructure, pathing patterns, and the strengths and limitations of motive power on the modern railway.
It really brought to life what lies behind the sight of a freight seemingly marooned on the ‘Bacon Factory Curve’ north of Ipswich as we come off the East Suffolk line to catch the next main line train for Liverpool Street. It also added meaning to the sometimes intermittent slowings of some midevening departures from Liverpool Street to Norwich, when the guard pronounces “slow-running freight train ahead”.
