ON November 23, work began on installing new ‘Manx Electric Railway’ letters on the hillside behind Derby Castle tram car sheds overlooking Douglas Bay. The new sign replaces that installed in 1993 to mark the centenary of the Manx Electric line, which was removed in October 2020 due to corrosion of the frame.
At the time it was said that the new sign would be ready for the 2021 season, but work was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic and discovery that the base of the sign was in worse condition than anticipated. The new sign reportedly cost £130,000 and is expected to last for 50 years.
