One thing that Namco really deserves credit for is embracing its heritage pretty early on.
Even as early as the mid-Nineties, the developer was packing games like Ridge Racer with references to arcade classics that launched before I was born, and the Namco Museum releases were among first retro gaming compilations I’d ever seen. It’s because of that effort that Mappy has lingered on the periphery of my gaming knowledge – despite having very little experience with the game, I could recognise the character, I could tell you who developed it and I could describe the basic layout of the game screen.
