Inspiring Improvisation

The combination of the improvised techniques and tools I utilized resulted in the exact effect I was seeking.
In addition to experimenting with techniques, sometimes changing out available tools and even improvising with handmade tools can be beneficial.
Another method I put to use is grinding the cylinder into a dome, as demonstrated in this photo of another lapidary artist at work.

Recently while I was discussing various carving techniques with Jack Hoque, the glyptic artist featured in the December 2018 issue of Rock & Gem, the subject of carving very small hemispheres came up.
