Treasured moment

Recently, while clearing out some drawers, I came across a cassette labelled, ‘Sunday lunch 1974’. My sister had given it to me, but it was forgotten and never got played. So before throwing it away, I thought I’d better check it out. What a wonderful surprise it was. Here were the voices of my mum, dad, two sisters and my lovely husband – all now long since gone – once more with me.
Never had I realised how alike my mother, sisters and I sounded. How my dad still had a soft Irish lilt even after 60 years in this country. My husband’s humour and appreciation of good food.
It’s easy to look at photos and be reminded by things and smells of loved ones but their voices fade with time. How lucky am I to be able to hear them all again whenever things get difficult. My children and grand boys are a joy, but how I bless my sister’s daft idea many years ago.

Piece of history
With reference to Chris Goss’s letter (December), where he described the enemy bomb attack in 1943 at St Catherine’s Lighthouse, the head keeper, Richard Grenfell, was my grandfather. I was very interested that a photo has been discovered taken by the pilot at the attack. Thank you, Chris, for discovering a part of my family history.

Love again
I joined a reputable dating site in my mid-seventies, hoping to meet someone with whom to go walking or to have days out. My early forays were mostly men who wanted to be looked after or have sex. I was about to give up when I met a man with whom I fell in love and who fell in love with me. He’d just joined the site and I was the first person to contact him.
We didn’t exchange photos, but we learnt a lot about each other through email. We arranged to meet in a café between our two homes. Mike had been a widower for just over a year and this was his first date after a 50-year marriage. We had lunch, looked at the local church and a medieval hall and by the time we went our separate ways we agreed to meet again. After a few more meetings, Mike asked me to marry him. Despite not knowing him for very long, I was certain it was right. It led to a second marriage for us both little over a year later.
