Detectives Don’t Sleep
This is a true crime podcast with a difference – it delves into historic crimes by shadowing the detectives who solved them. The first in the series takes us to the Case of the Pickled Corpse in 1920 and follows the work of dogged detective Ellis H Parker, who was famous in his day as a real-life Sherlock Holmes. He worked out the victim had been dead for longer than medical experts suggested since the river in which the body was dumped contained chemicals from a local tanning factory, hence the pickled corpse. Parker tracked down the killers via a speakeasy called the Lollipop Inn. Raymond Chandler couldn’t have scripted it better if he’d tried.
Other episodes see the sleuths of the day investigating cases such as the murder of billionaire Sir Harry Oakes in the Bahamas, a case so gripping it knocked the war off the front pages when news of it broke in 1943. The series is narrated by a deep-voiced Humphrey Bogartsoundalike, with a great immersive soundtrack.
