What is it with hair-themed SF and fantasy lately? What with hairdresser horror The Stylist, Intergalactic’s deadly dreadlocks and this campy effort, quite a clump has accumulated in the media plughole.
The work of Dear White People creator Justin Simien, Bad Hair works rather better when it’s operating as a character study/ historical snapshot than it does as a scare engine. Set in 1989, it follows Anna (Elle Lorraine), an employee at an MTV-style African-American music network, who’s pressurised into having an expensive weave to get ahead (pun intended). Unfortunately, the hair she’s had stitched in has a taste for human blood…
