What’s it all about:
The biggest event of Brazil’s cultural calendar, the parades at the 80,000-seat Sambadrome attract millions of visitors. Its origins began in 1840, and samba, the “perfect illustration of the Afro-European blend that defines Brazilian culture” appeared in the 1900s. Samba schools perform in front of judges who appraise the costumes, songs and dances. Balls take place alongside street parties, which get going three months before!
