What’s it all about:
Thailand celebrates Songkran, its traditional Thai New Year, when the sun passes into the constellation of Aries. Originating in a Buddhist folk myth related to the rice harvest, pouring water symbolises cleansing, reverence and good fortune. There are huge water fights where everyone joins in (even the elephants!), plays, games, music and feasting. Unity, cooperation, forgiveness and astrological knowledge all play important roles.
