KAZAKHSTAN
Words by Chad Wilkinson
Iwas reading a news article recently concerning the launch of a board game into space. At first this didn’t seem particularly novel to me; I’ve always assumed that astronauts would be quite partial to the odd game of chess, so long as they used magnetised pieces or velcro. But, oddly enough (at least according to this publication) my assumptions on celestial pastimes were wrong: Chess is still a terrestrial activity, and the first game to breach our atmosphere is actually the ancient and UNESCO listed Kazakh game, Togyzqumalaq.
