Amere few days before the issue in your hands was printed (and then in multiple updates since), the big day came – a wealth of new tariffs across the globe, announced by President Donald Trump. We knew it was coming, and indeed, you may remember a few issues ago that CJ Brittain wrote a fantastic article – The Trouble With Tariffs – which explained the potential impact should the worse happen. But, now that it has, if international economics aren’t your bag, we’re taking a quick dive back into why people are talking about this so much.
WHAT ARE THE TARIFFS?
In this instance, tariffs are an additional charge placed on products that are entering the country. Essentially, any products that come from elsewhere (say, China) into the USA, now have an additional cost to get into the country. There are plenty of politics behind who is getting which tariffs and certainly wider motivations, debates and disputes, but regardless it will mean that getting products into America will become more expensive.
