MAKING A SPLASH
LUCA I The filmmaking team on the inspirations behind Pixar’s must-sea bromance.
DISNEY
In Pixar’s spin on the continental coming-of-age movie, the besties are sea monsters who can assume human form on land. Luca director Enrico Casarosa (who previously helmed delightful short La Luna) draws on childhood summers spent in Italy’s riviera ‘Cinque Terre’ (‘five towns’) for a personal film with a hand-crafted aesthetic. “The artist’s hand is something I think a lot about,” he says. “We try to bring some of that warmth and imperfection to the computer animation.”
