GRANT US MORE GO-BETWEENS
Thanks for featuring The Go-Betweens in last month’s Album By Album [January 2025; Take 334]. It was good to hear Lindy’s and Amanda’s voices in there, particularly their contrasting views on 16 Lovers Lane. The sadness and the joy they reflected on was very moving. You should do an Album By Album on the solo records made by Grant and Robert, if only to bring some much-needed attention to Grant’s work. The highlight would have to be Horsebreaker Star, one of the great lost albums, and his song “Coming Up For Air”, perhaps the best “Go-Between” song of them all. Ralph Bullivant, Birkenhead
RE-REVVED
My favourite concert was Mercury Rev in the Limelight, Belfast, over 25 years ago. As a fresh-faced student, I was blown away by the wall of sound and extended guitar solos in the club, as the Rev toured Deserter’s Songs. Fast forward to Sunday night just past, and I saw them live for a second time, in the Mandela Hall, Belfast. A seated gig a quarter of a century later, I figured there was no way they could match that Limelight gig. But, damn it, if they didn’t come close! A wonderful night that included a stellar cover of Dylan’s “Love Sick” midway through the set.
