This 2ft (60cm) high Charles II needlework looking glass worked with figures and fantastical beasts emblematic of the seasons was estimated at $10,000-15,000 but sold at $80,000 (£61,500) in the Vogel collection.
Mirrors such as this (lined to the back with old red velvet) were intended to stand freely on a dressing table rather than hang on the wall. Good condition, engaging subject matter and the original glass plate helped fuel bidding. It was last sold by Mayorcas at the Grosvenor House fair in 1977.
Monochrome ‘redwork’ needleworks are extremely rare. Estimated at $5000-8000 but sold at $16,000 (£12,300) was a 16 x 22in (41 x 56cm) red wool on linen scene of Moses in the bulrushes.
