OUTBACK Magazine  |  OUTBACK 132
The humble cow goes well beyond the provision of meat and milk. As a central character in the Australian narrative, cows have been with us since the First Fleet and remain at our side as we face future challenges. The most recent statistics for Australia’s national cattle herd put the population at around 26.4 million animals, of which 24 million are classified as beef and two million as dairy, with Queensland accounting for nearly half the total figure.
This major feature is just one highlight of the new issue of OUTBACK. Others include tracks through the Snowy Mountains, an expedition into the Gibson Desert and an exploration of the Northern Territory’s Alligator rivers, along with our favourites of Dogs, Boots, Bush Kids, Bush Weddings and more.
