Wargames Illustrated

Wi458 February 2026 With this issue, we deliver our first Freebie Frame of the year: Soviet Army Infantry. As Georgy Zhukov knew all too well, you can never have enough Red Army infantrymen and women in your army – especially when they are of the quality of these, produced by Warlord Games! 2026 will feature loads more giveaways from Wargames Illustrated. Make sure you subscribe to stay updated (see page 3). We have some fun hobby ideas for using your new Soviet Infantry frame on page 20, but this month’s magazine theme couldn’t be further from Eastern Front World War Two tabletop action, as we take you back to a time of myth and legend. I have fond memories of eagerly inspecting a Jason and the Argonauts table at a 1990s Salute show in Kensington Town Hall, and being intrigued and inspired by the idea of wargaming classic scenes from the famous film. At the time, my knowledge of Greek mythology didn’t extend much beyond the film’s depictions of gods, heroes, and stop-motion Ray Harryhausen monsters. Over the years since my Salute-show introduction to tabletop mythology, I have enjoyed many a wargame involving Greek myths and legends. With the release of Osprey Games’ Warriors of Athena, I’m looking forward to enjoying many more. The story of Jason, his Argonauts, and the monsters so fantastically presented by Ray Harryhausen will always be my favourite jump-off point for such games, which was why I enjoyed Pete Brown’s article on the subject so much; I think you will, too. As well as Greek myth-themed scenarios (page 26) and Designer’s Notes (page 42), we also present Hellas hobby, as Wi’s James goes Greek with Gamers Grass (page 54).
