This will be my last editor’s letter before the lovely Kate returns from her maternity leave and resumes steering the WellBeing ship. It’s been quite the eight months for me as a first-time mum and first-time editor. As I’m sure every working mother will know, there are periods that feel nothing short of impossible. So often we speak of “balance” or “the juggle”, but really it is a push and pull, to and fro. A constant swinging pendulum, that never rests in an easy middle.
Careers and babies are not natural companions. Plenty of help, compromise and healthy boundaries are required to make it work. I like to think we will one day structure society to better support mums who want to re-enter the workplace, but for now a lot of origami thinking is needed to pull it off.
