BACK IN 1989, hip-hop act De La Soul told us that three is the magic number, and Swedish electric car specialist Polestar certainly hopes that’s really the case. The Polestar 3 is the brand’s new flagship; it’s closely related to the upcoming Volvo EX90 and a challenger to the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX, Lotus Eletre and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. To beat all those, the 3 needs to be something of a wizard.
At launch, there are two options: the standard Long Range Dual Motor with 483bhp and 620lb ft of torque, and the Long Range DualMotor withPerformance Pack, which boosts those figures to 510bhp and 671lb ft. Cheaper 295bhp, single-motor cars will follow.
The 0-60mph sprint takes 4.8sec in the regularversion, with the Performance Pack shaving 0.3sec off that time. Both cars give the iX xDrive50 and EQE 500 SUV a good run for their money, but more expensive variants such as the AMG EQE 53 and iX M60 would show them a clean set of heels. All 3s have a 107kWh (usable) battery that delivers an official range of 392 miles (348 miles for the Performance Pack). That beats all those aforementioned rivals.
