Steering wheel locks
With tech-savvy crooks sometimes able to bypass your car’s built-in security, one of the most effective means of preventing theft is a steering wheel lock. We put five of the best to the test
TESTING PROCESS
We tested our locks on three vehicles: a 2004 Mini hatchback, a 2010 Volvo XC90 SUV and a 2004 Renault Trafic van. We looked at ease of use – whether the locks were cumbersome or heavy, and whether they could be stored inside the car or would have to go in the boot – and timed how long it took to fit each of them. We also looked at whether they’re an effective visual deterrent, and how robustly they resist physical attacks. Their security ratings and value for money were taken into account, too.
SECURITY RATINGS
On some security products, you’ll see a ‘Sold Secure’ rating or ‘Secured By Design’ approval. Manufacturers can apply to have their products tested for attack resistance and graded by Sold Secure (Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond). Secured By Design is a police initiative to help manufacturers produce more effective security devices with the aim of cutting down on crime.
