Sonia O’Sullivan
Irish athlete Sonia O’Sullivan is one of only two women in the world who has won the short and long course World Cross Country title at the same championship

With a silver medal in the 5,000m from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Sonia is one of Ireland’s most successful female athletes. Her 1994 2,000m world record, of 5:25:36, stood until 2017, when Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia broke it. Her depth of talent is shown in winning 5,000m gold in the 1995 World Championships. She also won three gold medals at the European Championships, in the 3,000m (1994), 5,000m (1998) and 10,000m (1998), and she holds every Irish record from 1,500 to 10,000m and shows incredible range with her 3:58.85 for 1,500m and 30:47.59 for 10,000m.
