The last goodbye
Adjudicator Doris Corti highlights the winning entry from our New Subscribers’ Poetry Competition 2016
Poets keen to submit their work to Writing Magazine for the New Subscribers’ competition sent in poems on a variety of subjects.
Most of the poems were in free verse, although when a rhyme scheme was used it tended to follow a regular pattern.
As usual I was looking for themes that were original as well as the handling of subject matter. One entry gave a detailed description of the poet’s friend (a female) and the structure of this poem gave a beautiful portrait of the person. Describing someone in poetry has to be crafted well or lines can become too prosaic.
