There is an old (military) saying that time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted. If – when – you get a book published, how many copies it sells depends on many disparate factors. It is worth considering how a reader picks which book to buy and also about how you should relate to such factors (some of which need consideration before publication and even before writing). At a recent writing group meeting I attended this was discussed and the following seemed to those present to be amongst the most important factors influencing book buyer choice:
