Newspaper reports about historical events make for interesting reading and are excellent inspiration for writing. There are many online resources available to get you started – as well as libraries and archives you can spend many a fascinating hour, or six, delving into the newspapers and stories of the past. This month your writing group will be looking back to move forward in their writing.
What happened?
Some news items in historical newspapers can be perplexing and offer plenty of opportunities to dig out some pretty obscure and puzzling stories. Ask the group to read out short excerpts from historical newspaper articles that have had the headlines removed and names of people removed. Can they guess which historical event they are talking about? Which key bits of information did they need in order to discover what the article was about? The tone of the piece, the setting and the language used, can all help to identify the period and event the piece is about.
