Writing is such a private and intense process that it is hardly surprising that writers – particularly those with little or no experience of the professional side of the business either as journalists or contracted authors – can find it hard to view the opinions of professional ‘gatekeepers’ like me dispassionately. It may seem odd for me to say this, but there can be a tendency to invest us with too much significance both good and bad.
