It’s a Funny Old World
• There’s been quite a kerfuffle about a shirt.
The garment in question was worn by actor Colin Firth when he dived into a pond during the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, and according to all the chatter, turned him into a heart-throb when it got wet.
The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington has borrowed from costume supply house Cosprop the tent-like Regencystyle white shirt, to display as part of part of an exhibition, Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen, and the Cult of Celebrity, 6 August-6 November. There will be no copycat attempts to follow in Colin Firth’s damp footsteps. Garments from Cosprop must never be worn when hired out.
