The world of children’s publishing is hugely competitive. With so many stories landing on publishers’ and agents’ desks, how can your story stand out? It’s true that brilliant concepts, intriguing characters, tight plots and mesmerising writing obviously play a massive part... but... there are numerous writers who can also do all these things. What else can you do to stand out? One thing which really helps is to find your USP.
Your Unique Selling Point (USP) is exactly what it says on the tin – something which is unique to you or your idea, and which can help sell it. ‘Selling’ can seem a harsh and heartless word which strips away the hours of love and soul and creativity we writers pour into our projects, but at the end of the day, your story is a product to be sold and make money. And often you, as an author, are sold as a brand. If this doesn’t sound very appealing to you, it might be the world of traditional publishing is not for you!
