STAR LETTER
UNWANTED SCRUTINY
I thought my fellow short story writers might be interested to hear about a recent experience of mine. Googling my own name in an idle moment led me to a Danish website. There, I was amazed to find Not Wanted, first published in 2009 as part of an anthology about migration, being used as an English language revision resource. It had, I discovered, featured previously as an examination question.
Not only was it fascinating to read someone else’s analysis of my characters, setting and theme, but I’ve since been contacted by a Danish student inviting me to comment on his essay!
No permission was sought to use Not Wanted in this way, either from me or from the editors of the anthology, which seems rather cool. I can only hope that Danish students who enjoy the story might seek out some more of my work.
