POETRY WORKSHOP
ACE TRIBUTE
Alison Chisholm enjoys a poem about tennis star Roger Federer that takes an unlikely turn
Admiration is often expressed through written tributes, and a poem in admiration of a hero seems less transitory than a fan letter or an article. This tribute will be around for a long time, so it needs to capture the essence of its subject and record it for posterity.
Carol Blanche Featherstone, of Tarporley, Cheshire, was moved to write about the tennis champion Roger Federer, whom she describes as ‘one I found easy to talk about, introducing quite a different aspect to the character we have come to know’.
Carol’s natural impulse to respond in poetry when creating her tribute piece came as no surprise. She began writing poetry after completing her BA course, and soon decided to concentrate on this interest. Although she writes in varied forms and styles, she has particular affection for the sonnets of Shakespeare, and a wickedly funny rhymed poem by Arthur Conan Doyle, A Post-Impressionist.
