AUTHOR PROFILE
TIMOTHY JANOVSKY
The author talks to Margaret James about how his contemporary queer romances tell diverse love stories that take in aspects of modern life from mental health issues to online dating
As is the case with many authors, American novelist Timothy Janovsky says his interest in creative writing sparked early.
‘When I was in elementary school, I was chosen for a special programme called Challenge, where I was taken from my usual classes and brought to the library for an hour with a few other students and a visiting teacher,’ he explains.
‘We read fiction together, and wrote short stories and poems. At the end of the year, we had a tea party/reading of our work for our families. I read my story about an orphan picking dandelions on the side of the road. It was very sad. When I looked up, several of the parents were crying. At first, I was afraid I’d done something wrong, but then everybody clapped, and I realised they’d been moved by my writing. I learned how impactful storytelling could be, and I thought: maybe I could be a writer? Now, here we are!
