The drink doesn’t work

People don’t much talk about the sheer boredom of excessive boozing. At least, that’s what I’ve found over the past two years of Covid when my drinking habits — fuelled by being at home with only my partner, a dog, and a disgruntled cat (plus the worry and anxiety of an ever-present invisible threat outside) — got a tad out of hand.
Gone were the days of getting sloshed with mates down the pub and in were the days of being stuck on a sofa, glued to the telly, while getting wasted to blot out the terror of a world turned upside-down. It’s tedious enough watching TV all day, so the logic went, so I might as well do it pissed. You don’t have to be a genius to realise that this might not have been a good idea.
