From its maiden flight at the end of 1970, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat became the US Navy’s fleet air defence fighter. It served with 28 fleet squadrons, two fleet replacement squadrons, two test squadrons, and the Naval Fighter Weapons School dubbed TOPGUN.
Designed to protect carrier battle groups, the US Navy operated four variants.
