Breathe  |  Issue 066
‘What’s your favourite colour?’ Along with ‘What’s your star sign?’, it’s a pretty standard question in many a school playground. Readers of a certain age might also recall it fondly (or not) as a regular Q&A in long-gone pop magazines.
For some, the answer they give aged eight will remain true when they’re 80. Others won’t have a preference and many will say it varies according to mood, location, the weather, even an item – are we talking cushions, clothes or cars?
Whatever the response, being aware of the colours in our midst – and playing with them – is a great way of introducing a different focus to familiar routines, be that walking the dog of a morning, looking out of the train window on the commute home from work or perusing the supermarket aisles.
Imagine trying to count all the shades of green in a park, for example,
or scouring a builder’s yard for any instance of electric pink. The chances are it would also draw the attention to myriad other things – shapes, textures, scents, noise, movement.
On occasion, it might even provide the space and clarity to resolve problems, ignite the spark of inspiration to get a project off the ground or be a reminder of all that’s awesome in the world. It could just be a spot of fun or a moment’s much-needed peace; an analogue opportunity in a digital environment. Regardless of the reason, it’s great when the colour shines through – and even better if it is your favourite.
