In recent years a well-known burger chain introduced a new ordering system in its restaurants involving oversized smartphones, reducing the necessity for even the most modest amount of human interaction. This at least minimised your chances of being called ‘buddy’ by someone who wasn’t your buddy – and also gave rise to an exciting new option: the customise button. If you didn’t want gherkin, for instance, but liked extra ketchup, with a few well-placed finger taps you could orchestrate the kitchen into preparing you something unique.
