The Doctor Falls

Writer Steven Moffat and director Rachel Talalay dissect World Enough and Time, and look ahead to The Doctor Falls…

WARNING: Spoilers!

Previously on Doctor Who… Bill Potts got shot. Doctor Who ate Monster Munch, then panicked and did some Venusian aikido. Nardole took a selfie. The lampheaded, bag-faced Mondasian Cybermen from William Hartnell’s swansong serial, 1966’s The Tenth Planet, returned. Slowly, and then all at once. “I’d call it a genesis. Specifically, the genesis of the Cybermen.” The Master is back, too. Not that one. The other one. Teaming up with that one. Are you following? “Or would it help you focus if I extracted some of your vital organs and made a lovely soup?” We knew the rehabilitation of Missy seemed too good to be true. Unless –?

You have seen World Enough and Time, haven’t you? (If not – hello, ordinary person! You should probably stop reading now.) The episode aired on 24 June, and I know, I know, you’re still reeling. Take a moment. Deep breath. Let’s talk through what went down. From the dazzling highs of Floor Zero, to the shadowy depths of Floor 1,056…

First off, the cold open. That cold open. A very cold open. So fresh. The pre-titles scene was recorded on Monday 12 June, less than two weeks before the episode aired. In fact, as this issue goes to press, no-one at DWM has seen that opening scene. From our perspective, it hasn’t even been shot yet. Our to-print deadlines dictate that you, readers, know more about it than we do right now. So, was it thrilling? Was Twitter abuzz? Did you wet yourselves in excitement? (An involuntary Operation Exodus?) Also, what’s it like in the future? Are there hover cars? Did Alpha Centauri headline Glastonbury? Is Kris Marshall our Prime Minster? Please, can someone fill us in?!

” I realised that, by the time Episodes 11 and 12 go out, we might even know who the new Doctor is!” STEVEN MOFFAT, WRITER

How will the Doctor fall?

“The cold open,” says showrunner Steven Moffat, who wrote World Enough and Time, as well as this week’s feature-length The Doctor Falls, “is the Doctor, mortally wounded, staggering out of the TARDIS into the snow and starting to regenerate. I was looking at how our calendar worked, and I realised that, by the time Episodes 11 and 12 go out, we’d be nearing the day that we shoot the regeneration – we might even know who the new Doctor is! – so if we can exploit that for all it’s worth, two episodes early, then let’s do it. It gets people very excited. It gets me excited.” Is it really the regeneration, then? Or another fake one, à la The Lie of the Land?
