FlyPast  |  April 2016
The latest edition FlyPast features one of Britain’s best-loved warbirds on its cover. De Havilland Mosquito ‘F-for-Freddie’ is now flying in Canada, bringing the world’s population of airworthy Mossies to two. We look into the history of the aircraft this warbird represents, with rarely seen archive images, while photographer Katsuhiko Tokunaga goes air-to-air with the Canadian-owned example that flies today.
Shackleton Spotlight
Our regular Spotlight section examines a true Cold War warrior, the Avro Shackleton. With exclusive artwork and images, we reflect on the history of this long-lived machine, and take a look at its use in RAF and South African hands.
Mustang Workshop
Par Ericsson reveals how the remains of a Mustang found in a Swedish swamp have been turned into a museum piece.
Tigercats over Korea
Warren E Thompson describes the effective use of the Grumman Tigercat in the Korean War.
Phantom Saved
Once under threat of being scrapped, Phantom FG.1 XV582 ‘Black Mike’ is on its way to a new home.
Heinkel He 177
Chris Goss reflects on the stunted potential of a formidable Luftwaffe bomber.
Plus we scrutinise the 1956 Suez campaign in which British aircrew had several encounters with Egyptian and Syrian adversaries, and Darren Harbar takes a trip to Bruntingthorpe to celebrate the 60th birthday of Canberra WT333. Sean Feast speaks to Jack Barnes, who recalls his time flying against the Japanese in a rare version of the Bristol Blenheim, and we bring you news of a P-40 that has just flown, a Zero airborne in Japan, and a Sea Venom restoration.
