As we wind down and reconnect with people we haven’t seen for a while, Christmas is a rare opportunity for a personal end-of-year review – a time to reflect on what we’ve learned, and make plans for our future goals

Just like annual reviews at work, designed to help us uncover bigger-picture stuff, having our own-life debrief can highlight our strengths and uncover the areas which need attention. It’s not so much about digging around for New Year’s resolutions, more an exercise in checking in on our achievements and discovering what makes us fulfilled. But unlike your work review, you set the agenda, which requires some reflection. ‘It’s the best way to recognise where things have gone well and where they haven’t. If we don’t reflect, we don’t learn from our experiences,’ says occupational psychologist Kim Stephenson.
