A jam-packed weekend in Helsinki

Harbourside Helsinki melds graciously into the Baltic Sea – discover the best of the city’s heritage buildings, design shops and raucous bars and restaurants with our weekend guide.

Weekend in Helsinki

Harbourside buildings in the Hakaniemi district

Friday evening

Ease your way into the weekend at this excellent pub right by Kamppi bus station. Part of a local chain, it serves quality ales, stouts and berry ciders from its own microbrewery, in a long, split-level place with romantic low lighting and intimate tables (; Olavinkatu 2; noon–2am Mon–Thu, until 3am Fri–Sat, 3pm–midnight Sun; beer from £4.60).

Thought of by many as Helsinki’s best restaurant, Olo occupies a handsome 19th-century harbourside mansion. It serves modern Finnish cuisine with a touch of molecular gastronomy: dishes might include reindeer with blueberry and lichen. Book a few weeks ahead (; Pohjoisesplanadi 5; lunch & dinner Tue–Fri, dinner Sat; four-course lunch £35, dinner tasting menu £75).
