Henry Lawson wrote to a friend back in 1902: “If you know Bourke, you know Australia”. Doubtless a few things have changed there since Lawson’s day, but as we see in the engagingly written and beautifully photographed cover story Back o’ Bourke in our new issue, the country out the back of that fabled western New South Wales town on the banks of the Darling River still holds much that is archetypally Australian.
