The border security officer at San José airport looks at my passport photo and frowns. ‘Why aren’t you smiling?’ he demands. I explain that we’re not allowed to, but he’s having none of it. ‘Smile more,’ he says, ‘pura vida!’ This positivity becomes a hallmark of my trip. Statistically one of the happiest countries and a world leader in conservation – Costa Rica doesn’t just talk about change, it gets on with it.
